Clive Staples Lewis,
whose 111th birthday would have been celebrated on November 29,
2009, can lay claim to being one of the key English intellectual
authors of the mid-20th century. His work on philosophy, theology
and English literature – in particular his studies of Milton and the
poetry of the 16th-century – would have ensured his legacy. But it's
his fiction on
which his claim truly rests, despite its being marginalised in
discussions that tend to celebrate "serious" work for adults over
innovative and influential books for children. (an opinion
from the UK Guardian Newspaper)
Take a look at our BOOK
HIGHLIGHT link which highlights nine books you might want to
consider for your library or for a gift for the Lewis fans in your
life. Some of the titles haven't made it onto our regular books page
yet. And the
BOOK HIGHLIGHT bookstore makes it even easier to place these
books in a shopping cart and thereby support your favorite literary
society.
The Sept/Oct 2009 issue of the CSL
Bulletin features the essay, It's Not "All
in Plato" C.S. Lewis' Theory of Myth
(by Adam Barkman). There
is also a fictional installment entitled "J. R. R. Tolkien at Home"
(by David Downing) and a new "Jack and the
Bookshelf" column on what CSL thought about some
"Shakespearian Authorities" (by Dale Nelson). Why not become a subscribing member for $10 and read all
about it? (Foreign subscriptions have been increased to $20 dollar
per year due to recent postage rate hikes.)
There are four free lecture telecasts titled "THE
ART AND FAITH OF C.S. LEWIS" available
from Trinity Episcopal Church in New York City. The lectures are
by Rev. Dr. Clair McPherson. These are very professionally produced
and worthwhile, even for advanced students of Lewis. You can watch
them via Windows Media Player included with most computers.
The four lectures are:
MEET THE AUTHOR (includes a voice recording of Lewis)
JUMP INTO THE NOVEL (about The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe)
HOW TO WATCH A MOVIE (how a book is translated into a movie)
ADDING IT ALL UP (reactions to the movie)
Here is an
online study guide for Mere Christianity. It can
be downloaded as an e-text or as a Word document.
The great fantasy classic, The Magic Ring by Baron de
la Motte Fouqué, that anticipated J.R.R. Tolkien's The
Lord of the Rings is now available in English for the
first time in 181 years! The book is
edited and introduced by Tolkien scholar Dr. Amy Sturgis, author
of the essay "Harry Potter is a Hobbit", published in
the May-June 2004 issue of CSL: The Bulletin of the New York
C.S. Society.
